Electric Ray Models - Which One Is Right for Your Work?
From fine detail work to the manufacturing of big panels, three power sander variants are available:
3” × 4” Electric Ray - Detail & Profile Work
The most accurate electric hand sander available. Running at 4,000, 7,000, and 9,000 OPM, this brushless outer-runner motor has a 2,000–3,000 hour rating. 12-foot cable, 3 mm orbit, 2.47 lbs. Ideal for cabinet doors, mouldings, profiles, trim, edges, and between-coat finishing in tight areas.
5” Electric Ray Gen 2+ - General Purpose Finishing
The flexible mid-size electric orbital sander for woodworking, furniture, and finishing. Dual-chamber airflow technology dissipates heat and increases motor life. Available in 3/16” or 3/32” orbit. Runs at 4,000, 7,000, 9,000, and 10,000 RPM. 3.3 lbs, 12-foot cable, 110V.
6” Electric Ray Gen 2+ - Large Panel & Production Sanding
The highest-output power sander in the Electric Ray line. Same dual-chamber airflow and speed range as the 5”, scaled up for large panels, tabletops, doors, and production environments where coverage speed is the priority. Available in 3/16” or 3/32” orbit.

What Sets SurfPrep Electric Sanders Apart
Every SurfPrep electric orbital sander is developed around three priorities: motor longevity, operator comfort, and surface quality. Here is what makes the difference in daily professional use:
- Brushless outer-runner motor (3”×4”) - strong torque, greater energy efficiency, lower maintenance, rated for 2,000–3,000 hours of active usage
- Dual-chamber airflow (5” & 6” Gen 2+) - distributes heat under higher pressure, prolonging motor life in demanding production applications
- Internal components are shielded from dust and overheating by a patented cooling system with a spindle-bearing fan and sealed electronics.
- Variable speed control: 4,000, 7,000, 9,000, and 10,000 RPM settings adjust the sanding speed to suit the needs of the material and finish.
- Swirl-free finishes on flat surfaces, profiles, and curved work are produced by random orbital motion.
- Dust extractor-ready design - static-conductive components and multi-hole disc compatibility maintain full dust extraction on every pass
- Ergonomic structure - balanced grip and low weight (2.47–3.3 lbs) lessen operator fatigue after prolonged use
3/16” vs. 3/32” Orbit - Choosing the Right Cut
There are two orbit sizes for SurfPrep electric sanding tools. The correct orbit for the stage of work directly impacts finish quality:
- 3/16” orbit - faster stock removal, more aggressive cut. Ideal for sealer sanding, surface preparation, and early-stage material removal
- 3/32" orbit: less swirl marks and a better finish. Best for final sanding on raw wood and painted surfaces when surface quality is the focus
Without altering the electric orbital sander model, the majority of professional shops use both the 3/16" for cutting stages and the 3/32" for finishing stages.
