Sanders

Professional Sanders for Woodworking

For cabinet builders, furniture refinishers, painters, and woodworkers, electric and pneumatic sander versions are designed to last 2,000 - 3,000 hours and produce expert results from the first pass.

Sanders Built for the Demands of Professional Work

A good sander does more than merely remove material; it also prepares everything that follows. The final surface reflects the dust it produces, the scratch pattern it leaves behind, and the consistency it provides throughout the course of a workday. SurfPrep sanders are made for control, accuracy, and comfort throughout the day. These tools are made by specialists, for professionals, and are ideal for detail work, woodworking, cabinet refinishing, and furniture restoration.

Each sander in this line is vacuum-ready, comes with a one-year manufacturer's warranty, and works with award-winning SurfPrep abrasives.

What Separates a Professional Sander from the Rest

The construction of sanders varies. When selecting a sander for professional use, the following factors are crucial:

Type of motor: Compared to a brushed motor, a brushless outer-runner motor operates cooler, lasts longer, and produces more reliable torque. The brushless architecture of the Electric Ray is rated for 2,000 - 3,000 hours of continuous use.

Orbit size: For early stage sanding, a 3/16" orbit removes material more quickly. For between-coat work, a 3/32" orbit creates a finer scratch pattern. There is a discernible difference in finish quality when the proper orbit is used at the appropriate stage.

Size and weight: In confined spaces, smaller sanders (3" and 3" x 4") provide control and accuracy. For flat panels and manufacturing tasks, larger models (5", 6") cover more surface every pass.

Power source: Electric sanders use 110V and are self-sufficient. Shops that already have compressed air systems can use air power sanders because they are lighter.

Find the Right Sander for Your Work

Electric Ray: The Electric Sander Without a Brush

The flagship electric sander from SurfPrep comes in 3", 3"×4", 5", and 6" sizes. The brushless outer-runner motor is rated for 2,000 - 3,000 hours of active use and operates at 4,000, 7,000, 9,000, and 10,000 RPM. It is self-contained and does not require a compressor. For high-pressure production applications, the 6" Gen 2+ incorporates a dual-chambered airflow system.

Storm: The Small Air Sander

The little air sander from SurfPrep comes in three sizes: 3", 3"×4", and 3"×7". Designed for stores that currently use compressed air, it is lighter than an electric tool. Note: Before making a purchase, check the PSI and CFM output because pneumatic sanders demand a powerful air compressor.

Trident: The Pneumatic Sander with High Efficiency

The 5" and 6" versions of this high-end orbital sander are suitable for compressed air systems. The ideal air power sander for high-volume cabinet operations operating broad panels, it operates at 10,000 - 12,000 OPM with all day operator comfort.

 Sander Size: What Changes

3" and 3"×4" for between-coat finishing, detail work, and tight spaces. 5" and 6" for production on flat surfaces when covering speed is crucial. The majority of professional stores operate one of each.

3/32" vs. 3/16" Orbit Size

3/16" removes material more quickly coat cut-through and early-stage sanding. For between-coat finishing, 3/32" yields a finer scratch pattern. Without altering anything else, the finish quality improves with the correct orbit and stage.

Which Is Better for Your Shop, Electric or Air?

No compressed air? The Electric Ray electric sander is operational and self-contained. Compressed air is already in use? The Storm or Trident air power sanders are designed to increase production throughput and are lighter. Your configuration is different, yet both produce the same expert outcome.

Pro Tips: Getting the Most from Your Sander

A fantastic sander is only as good as the method used to make it. Professionals who consistently achieve outstanding results are distinguished by these habits:

  • Sand with the grain. Any cross-grain passes result in scratches that appear beneath the finish.
  • Let the sander do the work. Using too much pressure will result in an uneven cut and hasten pad wear.
  • Keep the pad flat. Tilting the sander concentrates pressure on one edge and causes marks.
  • Before moving to the next grit, examine your scratch pattern in low light. What you can't see now will show in the finished product.
  • Use the correct orbit for the job. A 3/16" orbit is ideal for stock removal, while a 3/32" orbit is best for between-coat finishing.
  • Every SurfPrep sander is vacuum-ready for a reason. Sanding without dust extraction allows particles to return to the surface. Vacuum every pass.
  • Don't skip grits. Going from 80 to 180 leaves scratches that 180 grit cannot remove. Work your way up gradually.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between the Electric Ray and the Storm or Trident sanders?

The Electric Ray is a 110V brushless electric sander that doesn't need a compressor. The Storm is a small air sander designed for production and confined spaces. Designed for high-volume flat surface sanding, the Trident is a bigger pneumatic orbital sander. Vacuum compatibility applies to all three.

Which SurfPrep sander is best for cabinet refinishing?

The most widely used sander for cabinet refinishing is the 3" x 4" Electric Ray, which can be used for between-coat finishing, door faces, and flat panels. The 5" or 6" versions cover more surface per pass in high-volume production cabinet shops.

Do SurfPrep sanders work with a shop vac?

Indeed. Each sander in this line is vacuum-ready and works with both SurfPrep HEPA dust extractors and regular shop vacuums. It only takes a few minutes to set up dust-free sanding; simply attach the hose adapter and start working.

How long do SurfPrep electric sanders last?

The brushless outer-runner motor of the Electric Ray is designed to run for 2,000 - 3,000 hours. Before any maintenance is required, that equates to years of regular professional use. A one-year manufacturer's warranty is included with every sander.

Are refurbished SurfPrep sanders available?

Indeed. There is a discount on refurbished 3" x 4" Electric Ray sanders. Before being sold, every refurbished unit is examined and tested. Please take note that refurbished sanders cannot be returned or exchanged.
