 Grab the wrong sanding belt and you know it right away. Either you are crawling through stock that should be coming off fast or you are watching the surface tear when you needed a pristine finish. The first choice you make every time you load a belt is grit size. The appropriate choice here impacts how fast you work and how much rework you do later.  

Grit size is measured according to two criteria. FEPA (European) utilizes a "P" prefix - P60, P120, P320. CAMI (U.S.) eliminates the prefix and uses the number alone. At lower grits they are almost the same: CAMI 60 ≈ FEPA P60 ≈ 268µm particle size. Beyond 220, the scales start to differ, so always see which scale your sanding belts utilize before purchase

How Grit Works: Coarse to Ultra-Fine

  • Coarse (24-60): Heavy stock removal. Used on belt and disc sander to flatten glued panels, peel old paint or polish welds on steel. Aggressive — handle with caution on edges.  

  • Medium (80-120): General smoothing and preparing. Knocking down planer markings, merging grind lines on metal, prepping bare wood for priming.  

  • Fine (150–240): Final sanding before applying finish. Furniture parts, cabinet doors, and knife bevels prior to polishing.  

  • Fine / ultra-fine (320–600+): Inter-coat sanding of lacquer, polishing non-ferrous metals, edge honing of blades.  

 

Choosing the Right Grit for Wood, Metal, and Composites 

The grit previously loaded isn't what decides the ideal sanding belts for your project, but rather the material and the job. Recommended starting and finishing grits by material: 

Softwoods (Pine, Fir) 

When planing stock, start with an 80-grit belt and then go to 120–150. Only use 24-36 for flattening badly warped boards Open-coat aluminum oxide sanding belts resist clogging when used on softer woods. 

Hardwoods (Oak, Maple, Walnut) 

Begin at 60–80 grit for rough dimensioning, refine through 120–180 before finishing. A typical wide belt sander sequence in cabinet shops runs 80 → 120 → 180. 

Mild Steel and Stainless 

36-60 grit for weld removal and severe beveling. 80-120 grit for blending. For standard steel applications, the durable option is ceramic or zirconia sanding belts. 

Non-Ferrous Metals (Aluminum, Brass) 

An 80-150 grit progression. For soft alloys, glass, stone and composites where precision is important, silicon carbide is the abrasive of choice. 

Composites and Painted Surfaces 

80-120 grit for stripping coatings, 150-240 for refinishing. Sand a tiny area initially so you don’t sand through veneers. 

Matching Grit to Your Machine 

The same grit works differently, depending on the machine. The abrasive cut is influenced by changes in pressure, belt speed and platen size. 

Handheld Belt Sander 

Common sanding belt diameters are 3”×21”, 4”×36”, and 2”×72”. For regular carpentry use 60 to 120 grit. Very coarse belts can bite the edges and remove too much material too rapidly. 

Belt and Disc Sander 

A belt and disc sander is a workhorse in small operations for shaping parts, cleaning end grain and squaring stock. Begin with the coarse belts for rough shaping then move on to medium or fine for smoothing. This allows you the ability to perform a wide variety of jobs without changing machines. 

Wide Belt Sander 

There are also multi-head machines which can go from rough to finish ready in one pass, with the first head set at 80 grit, the second at 120 and the third at 180. Multi-head machines are typically used in production shops running a wide belt sander. That consistency equals hours saved in a full manufacturing run. Grit number is simply one part of the story. The life of service and the cool running of the sanding belt is affected by the abrasive grain and backing.    

  • Aluminum oxide – The most popular choice for woodworking and soft metals. Cost-effective from 60-220 grit and does most shop work reliably.  

  • Zirconia alumina: Grinds aggressively on stainless steel and hardwoods, as it self-sharpens with use. Will last around 2× longer than aluminum oxide under intensive use.  

  • Ceramic - For heavy duty debris removal on hardwoods and hard metals . Stays cool under pressure and keeps cutting power longer. The perfect solution for wide belt sander installations and 2"x72" knife grinder machines.  

  • Silicon carbide - Sharp but brittle, great for finer grits on stone, glass, composites and between-coat finishing on lacquers.
