Backup Pads for Sanders

Professional backup pads and backing pads in 3”, 3”×4”, 3”× 7”, 5”, and 6” sizes — Hook & Loop, J-Hook, and PSA attachment types. Shipped direct to all 50 U.S. states from facilities in California and North Carolina.

What Are Backup Pads?

backup pad is the interface between your sander and the abrasive disc. It provides a stable backing surface that distributes sanding pressure evenly, ensures consistent abrasive contact, and extends abrasive life by preventing uneven wear.

The appropriate sanding disc backing pad or orbital sander backing pad impacts material removal rate, dust extraction efficiency, and finish quality. Choosing the improper type — wrong attachment, wrong size, wrong hole pattern – decreases abrasive performance and increases replacement frequency.

SurfPrep backup pads are made to operate with SurfPrep electric and pneumatic sanders for woodworking, cabinetry, automotive refinishing, and marine finishing. To suit every sanding application, they come in a variety of diameters and backing types. With over five decades of surface preparation experience, it is trusted by experts in all 50 states of the United States.

Backing Type Guide

SurfPrep backing pads come in three attachment kinds, each of which is appropriate for a distinct abrasive and use:

Hook & Loop

Quick abrasive attachment and removal thanks to the small hook design. Ideal for SurfPrep foam abrasives and applications requiring frequent abrasive changes. For the majority of SurfPrep electric and pneumatic sander configurations, the orbital sander backing pad is the standard option.

J-Hook & Loop

Longer hook profile for greater holding strength. Recommended for interface pads, pad savers, film abrasives, paper abrasives, and non-woven abrasives. The ideal backing pad for sanding tasks requiring stability and grip is one that stops pad movement during vigorous sanding.

Pressure Sensitive Adhesive (PSA)

Designed for adhesive-backed sanding discs. Best for flat surface sanding where a rigid attachment is preferred. A PSA sanding disc backing pad delivers consistent pressure across the full disc surface — ideal for primer and paint preparation on flat panels.
