Pro Tips: Getting the Most from Your Sander

A fantastic sander is only as good as the method used to make it. Professionals who consistently achieve outstanding results are distinguished by these habits:

  • Sand with the grain. Any cross-grain passes result in scratches that appear beneath the finish.
  • Let the sander do the work. Using too much pressure will result in an uneven cut and hasten pad wear.
  • Keep the pad flat. Tilting the sander concentrates pressure on one edge and causes marks.
  • Before moving to the next grit, examine your scratch pattern in low light. What you can't see now will show in the finished product.
  • Use the correct orbit for the job. A 3/16" orbit is ideal for stock removal, while a 3/32" orbit is best for between-coat finishing.
