What Is an Interface Pad? 

An interface pad is a layer of foam that provides cushioning between the abrasive disc and the backup pad on your orbital sander. It permits flat abrasives to flex around profiles, contours, and edges while absorbing heat and preventing backup pad hooks from melting.  

Required when employing film, screen, or paper abrasives. Not required when using foam abrasives.

Interface pads are sometimes confused with SurfPrep ProFoam abrasives. Both give versatility to the sanding arrangement, but perform differently. With a paper or film abrasive on an interface pad, the grit cuts at its rating: 80 grit cuts like 80 grit.  ProFoam abrasives compress under pressure, pushing the grit into the foam, and cut softer than their rating indicates. An 80 grit on ProFoam will cut more like a 150 grit. Interface pads provide you with flexibility and complete cutting aggression. ProFoam provides you with maximum conformability and a softer cut.

  • The most adaptable interface sanding pad size is 3" × 4". Compatible with Electric Ray 3”×4” and Storm Air 3”×4”. Ideal for tiny spaces, between-coat finishing, profiles, and detail work. Both vacuum and non-vacuum setups are available.  
  • 5” — compatible with Electric Ray Gen 2+ 5” and Trident Air 5”. Best for flat panel production sanding and cabinet doors. Vacuum holes are available.  
  • 6” — compatible with Electric Ray Gen 2+ 6” and Trident Air 6”. Ideal for production work with high demand and huge flat panels. Vacuum holes are available.

Interface Pads for Orbital Sanders 

SurfPrep Sanding’s interface pads for orbital sanders are designed especially for the random orbital action that defines orbital sanding. A flat abrasive cannot bear the heat and friction points created by the orbital pattern without cushioning; the interface pad evenly distributes this pressure over the disc to maintain constant abrasive contact throughout each pass.   

  • All SurfPrep orbital sanders, including Electric Ray (3", 3"×4", 5", 6", Storm Air, and Trident Air, are compatible.  
  • Each sanding pad is precisely sized to prevent overhang and pressure buildup at the edges.  
  • During orbital sanding, vacuum-hole alignment is maintained for continuous dust extraction across all sizes.
